Once thought of as a source of noise that affected image quality, laser speckle analysis now is widely employed to study the dynamics of biological specimens. From the pioneering work of Joseph Goodman introducing the concept of speckle contrast, to the seminal work in the 1980s on laser speckle photography by Adolf Fercher and David Briers, to the neuroimaging work of the early 2000s from Andy Dunn and David Boas, the use of laser speckle contrast for biological and biomedical applications has rapidly increased. Popular applications of speckle image analysis include the measurement of moving objects, such as red blood cells, and the mechanical properties of biological tissues and specimens. Furthermore, due to the relative simplicity of the basic setup required to image a speckle pattern, various embodiments of laser speckle imaging have been investigated to measure human subjects, including the use of endoscopes, surgical microscopes, and handheld devices.
To inform the community on some of the latest, exciting advances in laser speckle measurements, JBO will host a Hot Topics webinar, Advances in Laser Speckle Measurements for Biomedical Applications.
Hosted by JBO Editor-in-Chief Brian Pogue (Univ. of Wisconsin Madison) and moderated by Bernard Choi (Univ. of California, Irvine), the live webinar will feature different aspects of the field via talks from key speakers:
